A Home for Dogs and People

Azil, founded in 2007, is a non-profit organization sheltering stray, abandoned and disabled dogs. There are over 200 dogs in the shelter currently waiting for adoption and there were 300 dogs adopted in 2016. Lucy, a current employee in Azil, said she was happy to see how fast the organization progressed and was proud to make social impact in the community.
At first, there were not enough food prepared for dogs and the environment was terrible. Thanks to the donation from people in the community, however, Azil got everything they needed. Dogs were treated badly before the foundation of the organization, but now dog chains are banned in the whole nation and animal euthanasia is banned in Osijek and is expected to pass in the parliament by 2018. The citizens of Osijek have become more aware of animal rights and they choose to adopt dogs in Azil. Not only does the organization eliminate the stigma of dog adoption, but also the lifestyle of the employees. Many went vegan because their job is to stop dogs from suffering and it is unfair to protect dogs exclusively. They are aware of the fact that all animals are equal and should be treated humanely.
Azil faced financial problems because all dogs are fully vaccinated and microchipped. Expensive vet treatments and daily food preparation are the other burdens that Azil has to deal with. However, they managed to sustain their operation because of several fundraising activities. For example, they designed calendars with dog pictures, and they also hold second-hand bazaars.
The Discover Slavonia Team wishes that Azil will continue working on issues about animal rights. Most importantly, we want to urge them to continue their cause in providing a perfect home for the dogs.
