When you visit Belišće, it may strike you as a typical small town, whose life is mostly connected to the factories, the main source of employment for the locals. It’s not entirely true – Belišće has so much more to offer! It’s been named a European Town of Sport 2017. This small, yet interesting town has a long history of sports competitions. Many of Croatia’s greatest sportsmen come from there. The most famous one is definitely Matija Ljubek, who won several Olympic medals in canoeing. Following the steps of Matija Ljubek, the Discover Slavonia team decided to go to the river Drava and try canoeing. This tiring but exciting activity gave us a chance to take a closer look at the beautiful landscapes surrounding Belišće. At the end of our trip we enjoyed a delicious lunch in local restaurant Gutmann.
Although you can’t deny the beauty of Belišće, its diversity and cultural importance, the one thing that stole our hearts was the local people. Always smiling, welcoming, ready to help, explain everything and answer our numerous questions.
