Today, we were so excited to go to Valpovo. It takes 45 minutes to there go from Osijek by bus. When we arrived, we realized that Valpovo was a small town with only a few tourists, yet the castle will surprise you for its architecture and history. The scenery of the whole town will take your breath away when you reach the top of the castle.
The centre of Valpovo stands on the remains of the fort of Lovallia. In the Middle Ages, the Prandau-Normann Castle was established to keep a look-out over the nearby Drava river. The castle was later owned by the Morović,Gorjanski and Norman families. The castle was used as a garrison during the conquest of Turkey.
In 1687, after the expulsion of the Turks, the area was handed over to the Hilleprand Prandau family. At the beginning of the 19th century the castle was destroyed by fire and was extensively reconstructed.
Today it houses the Valpovo Museum (Muzej Valpovštine). The museum exhibits precious archaeological finds and historical relics in an authentic setting. The depiction of this history of Valpovo and its environs made us understand a lot more of the Croatian history. Overall, it was a nice visit to Valpovo. We were rambling all day long in this slow-paced and relaxing town.
